Especially when the players that it's proposed Tottenham Hotspur would receive are rather undesirable. The Guardian is reporting that Chelsea are set to renew their interest in Luka Modric, but they won't be raising the proposed transfer fee from the previously rejected £27 million. Instead, Chelsea are prepared to include Yossi Benayoun and Salomon Kalou in the deal. Excuse me while I go throw up.
Ok, aside from the fact that this type of deal never works, this deal is insulting. Why would Tottenham Hotspur want Benayoun? The Israeli midfielder is 31 years old and, in my opinion, has been underwhelming in all his stops in England and I'm not sure he has much of a role to play for Spurs. As for Kalou, he's a pretty good footballer, but I just dislike him personally. I'm not sure how he fits into our system either.
Here's another reason another reason why this deal is dumber than a Dane Cook movie: the wages of the players involved. Neither Benayoun nor Kalou make the astronomical wages of some of the other Chelsea players, but It would certainly be an addition of more than £120,000 per week for the two players. With the departure of Keane and Modric could Spurs afford that? Probably, but then what are we left with to pay whoever we end up buying with that £27 million?
I'm not completely opposed to a part exchange deal for Modric. I am, however, opposed to a deal involving these two players. If Chelsea were to offer Daniel Sturridge and one of their defenders I'd probably jump at the offer. However, I think the best course of action for this whole situation is to hold out until Chelsea match our asking price for Modric in cash, not cash plus players.
In the words of Didier Drogba, this deal is a "F***ing disgrace!"
