For all the money we may save by waiting to do deals at the last moment, I do not think it's worth it. Is there not also HUGE value (not monetary) in giving a new player preseason time to gel with the squad?
Lets take the most realistic transfer news as an example: Samba. We have put in an offer that is too low for him. Not 22 for luka low, but low none the less. If he is really a player we want we need to go out and buy him with whatever player+cash deals without playing games. Why? I could tell you in simple terms that any club that wants to mount a title run knows its more important to get players in than to get them on the cheapy cheapy, but ill provide you with a metaphor.
You havn't trimmed up downstairs in a while, and the weekend is fast approaching. You could say to yourself "oh I like to really get the most out of trimming, so I want to wait til the hair gets a liiiiitttttttlllleeee longer to make this trim up the best value bit of manscaping the world has ever seen". But what happens when you stumble upon a fine nice lady out of the blue? (I know most of you are thinking VDV! VDV! but every once in a while you stumble upon a girl who likes messy situations) You are unprepared and need to get her home, run to the bathroom and do a quick job. You step out and seal the deal. You can feel happy about getting the job done despite the crazy circumstance, but you cant help but think "I dont think men who are used to taking pretty women home operate this way"
Therein lies the point. If we want Samba we want him NOW not at the deadline with a little better of a deal. He will be able to play D still, but we start out attacks different than blackburn. Instead of god forbid dropping points in the process of getting used to our style, he can come in to the team much more prepared and comfortable in the team. Just because buying a player at this time in the transfer window doesn't show up on the balance sheet as value, there is intangible value in getting your team in and together early. I am not saying we need to abandon out philosophy as a whole, we need a keen eye for bargains all the time. But just like when the guys are out, no one goes out planning on bringing home a bargain. If given the opportunity to take home a gem, lets not let other guys buy her drinks all night and try to play the last ditch angle. Lets step up and by the pretty lady a top shelf drink to make sure we get what we want every once in a while.
