I think that the top priorities in January should be a true #10 to play behind the striker in the 4-2-3-1 and someone who is formation adaptable so when AVB wants to switch into his 4-4-2 or his true preference 4-3-3, we won't have the same selection problems. Selling Rafa was such a bad call. If we aren't going to buy then Iago Falque should be given a run in the spot as he has been sharp when given a chance. Also, we need at least 2 defenders in to add cover. Dawson and Gallas have proven to be too slow to play the high line and until Benny comes back, Vertonghen will be kept out of his strongest spot (CB). Naughton is not the answer, perhaps recalling Danny Rose would do some good but there needs to be a 3rd center back that can be rotated along with Jan and Caulker. I think depth at striker already exists in the youth team with Shaq Coulthirst and Soulimane Coulibaly who are extremely impressive and should be given a chance. Last but not least, Hugo needs to be given the #1 jersey. Against Arsenal he looked sharp but let down by the defense, primarily Gallas and Naughton time and time again. He showed his skill with the ball at his feet and is a better distributor than Fridel and overall much quicker and instinctual than Brad.
Wesley Sneijder is going to completely break the wage structure but he is the ideal signing with rumors of his exit at Inter imminent. Not likely but would be a top class signing. Pjanic isn't likely to go anywhere. Christian Eriksen is the perfect signing but may not leave Ajax in the winter window but these are the types of players that Spurs need to buy to prove we are in the same class as the only league contenders.
As far as defense goes, Toby Alderweireld is a great target but also unlikely in winter. Ricardo Carvalho has the guile and could be had cheap also.
What does everyone think?
