Many hoped that the arrival of Andres Villas-Boas at Tottenham Hotspur would be a new beginning for Giovani dos Santos. People hoped that he would be able to get a blank slate and let his prodigious skills earn him a place at Tottenham instead of being relegated to the bench because of the bad impression he left on the club when he first signed on at White Hart Lane.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that is going to happen. Before Gio could even join the club for training, he has managed to piss off Villas-Boas (cue Kevin crying).
"I am not sure what Gio's thought process was, coming out with a statement like that.
"The player is contracted to the club. We respect him and are counting on him to return to club duty. Then we will make a decision that is best for the club."
So much for that fresh start. He's off playing with Mexico in the Olympics and has still managed to upset his new manager.
With the way that Spurs have treated Gio in the last couple years it is understandable that he wants to leave the club, but his speaking publicly (or his agent speaking publicly) has hurt him. Giving his new manager a chance before turning to the press might have gone over better.
Under Villas-Boas, Gio could get the chance to shine on the wing, which isn't his preferred position, but it is one where he could be successful and where there is playing time available. He can still get that playing time there, but now he will have to climb uphill to do it.
