Jake Livermore Recalled To England Squad

Out of the tedium of the September international break, compounded this year by the rather flat end to Tottenham's first run of games under André Villas-Boas, something positive has emerged out of Spurs Lodge today as it was announced that Jake Livermore has been called up for England's World Cup Qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday. Along with Liverpool's Raheem Sterling and Southampton's Adam Lallana, he will act as a replacement for one of a spate of injured national team regulars including Theo Walcott, John Terry and Ashley Cole.

The promising central midfielder will undoubtedly be delighted that his first appearance for England in a friendly against Italy did not amount to him becoming a one-hit wonder on the international stage (Dave Nugent, anyone?). I don't doubt, however, that this piece of news will lead to some discussion across the Spurs communities online as to whether or not Livermore has been good enough so far this season to represent his country. In my view, we should only ever have good things to say about a decent homegrown player going on to represent England, but even more importantly, it's fair to say that Jake's call-up has not merely fallen into his lap- he's done enough in my eyes to earn it in in his three starts this season so far through the sheer work rate and commitment to the shirt he's shown thus far. Congratulations Jake!
