An interesting report from ESPN FC is putting forward a new front-runner in the Tottenham Hotspur Technical Director race. After current Roma General Manager Franco Baldini ruled himself out of such a role, a Barcelona alum has apparently come to the forefront. The man linked is Txiki Begiristain, a former star winger with Real Sociedad and Barcelona.
Begiristain is former Director of Football at Barcelona, occupying the position from 2003 to the end of the June 2010, when he left the position. Obviously, Begiristain's tenure saw Barcelona transform from a side that had fallen second fiddle to the "Galacticos" of Real Madrid to one of the greatest teams the world has ever seen. Barcelona has relied heavily on its youth development to achieve this, rather than sheer cash outlay.
Begiristain would surely be asked to begin to assemble a youth system if he takes over the Tottenham Hotspur job that is in the style he flourished with at Barcelona. And with academy products like Steven Caulker, Andros Townsend, and Harry Kane on the precipice of thriving, there seems more evidence than ever that there is a real base with Begiristain to work with.
Begiristain has an impressive resume, and would have to be considered favored to take over the job if interested. But is Txiki the man you would want helming the Technical Director position for Tottenham Hotspur? Sound off below:
