Writers Prediction League - Season Finale

Paul Gilham

The writers at Cartilage Free Captain predict the result for Tottenham Hotspur's match at Sunderland and Arsenal's match against Newcastle United.

It all comes down to this. Spurs are one point behind Arsenal entering Showdown Sunday. The scenario is simple--Spurs need to earn a win and hope Arsenal drops points. If that happens, Spurs earn fourth place and a trip to the Champions League. If Spurs fail to surpass Arsenal, then another trip to the Europa League looms.

Spurs host Sunderland in their final match. Sunderland narrowly avoided relegation, sitting 17th in the table. New Manager Paolo di Canio has touted his performance in saving Sunderland, but the Black Cats have struggled of late, earning just two points in their last three games. Danny Graham is a main threat in attack, while Simon Mignolet will try to marshall as goalkeeper.

Arsenal travels to Newcastle in their decider. Arsenal have been in torrid form since losing the second North London Derby. They face a Newcastle side that has been incredibly up and down this season. After last season's fifth-place finish the side has struggled, currently sitting in fourteenth place on the table. However, a surprise win could see Newcastle rise to the top half of the table.

As for the Prediction League, Mechanick is on top with predictions coming for the Spurs and Arsenal matches. The rules remain the same in the Prediction League--one point for a correct prediction, a bonus point for getting the score correct. Here are the current standings:

Name Score
Mechanick 30
Petrilli 28
Ashlock 24
Ryan 23
Kevin 19
Uncle Menno 19
The Roosevelts 18
Ed 17

This week's predictions:

Kevin: 2-0 Spurs, 1-0 Arsenal, barf.

Mechanick: Spurs slay a declining Sunderland side while Arsenal are foiled by a Yohan Cabaye-led performance. Spurs 2-0, Arsenal Draw 1-1.

Ryan: It's like I have ESPN or something. My breasts can always tell when it's going to rain. Well... they can tell when it's raining. 2-1 Spurs, 2-2 Arsenal Draw. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BOUND.

Ashlock: 2-0 Spurs, but Arsenal thrash Newcastle 4-0 and we are sad all summer.

The Roosevelts: 2-0 Spurs 1-0 Newcastle, because if anyone deserves to finish last it's me.

Ed: 2-1 Spurs, 6-1 Arsenal.

Petrilli: Spurs 2-1, Newcastle 2-1. I Spurs'd up this WPL.

Uncle Menno: Spurs 3-1 Sunderland, Toon 1-1 Arsenal. Fuck it. I'm all in. YOLO
