I think this is an excellent blog and as a Spurs fan I really appreciate the time and effort you guys put into it. I regularly listen to Wheeler Dealer Radio too and I think you guys provide some great analysis whilst generally providing a balanced, accurate and informed view on the club and the players we have. My one gripe however is this blogs complete over estimation of Tom Carroll's abilities. I respect that everyone on this blog is entitled to their own opinion and this is not a rant against any of you or young Carroll himself, who is in my opinion a pretty decent young player.
Tom Carroll has looked quite promising in the few cameo's he has made for the first team this season. He certainly has an eye for a pass and he plays the game in the right way; with his head up. It is clear to see that he is a player that likes to dictate tempo and create opportunities for the players ahead of him. However a few nice touches, one short pass to Bale vs West Ham and a few eye catching, attempted through balls in the home defeat vs Fulham do not make him the world beater that this blog seems to make out.
If Carroll was really so good then he would be far more involved in the first team set up and he would have been far more involved in the England youth set-ups over the last few years, something which until this year wasn't looking particularly likely. If AVB really trusted him then surely he would have been used more, particularly towards the end of the season! I can appreciate he is still young and he could develop in to a useful first team player at Spurs however my gut feeling is that he won't. He clearly isn't rated exceptionally highly by the coaching staff at Tottenham otherwise he would have played more for the club, particularly ahead of struggling midfielders such as Hudd and Parker. I also think the fact that he can't get into an exceptionally poor England U21 side illustrates that he isn't rated as anything special by the FA coaches.
I want Carroll to succeed, believe me I really do however if you compare him to other young midfielders at the top clubs around Europe, he just isn't anywhere near as good...As much as I hate to say it Wilshere vs Carroll - no contest. I think this blog wants Carroll to be better than he is, at the moment he is just an OK youth prospect that has had a few decent cameos. Yes he has looked promising at points, but if he was really that good he surely would have played more regularly or had a loan move to a decent premiership club. He didn't play much this season and I hope he gets more game time this time around so we can see what he is really made of but I think this blog should really chill out on the Carroll hype. I fear CFC may be building him up to be something that he will never be, which will ultimately leave everyone disappointed. Other spurs blogs (ones which aside from this issue are generally nowhere near as good as CFC) don't rave about him in the same way that this blog does.
This is my first post and I'm not trying to infuriate any of you however I genuinely just struggle to see whether the Tom Carroll rave reviews this blog provides are justified! He is by no means Tottenham's best youth prospect, Andros Townsend's excellent performances for QPR showed just who should be given that title! Carroll is quite a good player but to be honest I will be very surprised if he is still at the club in 2 or 3 years.
Aside from the privilege of playing for Tottenham Hotspur, the kid has achieved very little in the game. He hasn't scored or created goals and he hasn't done much to justify the title the 'The English Xavi'. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the kid and I support Carroll every time he pulls on the jersey! I want you guys to convince me to join the Tom Carroll bandwagon so by all means please give it your best shot! However, unless the guy really performances this season I think that might be difficult! Thoughts?
