I couldn't help but find it ironic that Andros Townsend had his breakthrough game for the club at the same time reports were filtering through that Chelsea were about to come in over the top for Willian.
I wonder if Townsend's performance, would have made Tottenham question whether Willian was really the player we needed. If Lamela comes as expected we seem ridiculously stacked for depth on the flanks with Townsend, Lamela, Chadli and Lennon, not to mention Sigurdson's ability to play wide if needed.
Willian is best known as a left-winger, but reports have suggested he'd be more likely to be looked at as a ten, which I think is obviously our weakest position right now. No player has really claimed ownership of that position yet, with Sigurdson and Holtby the most likely at this stage. We need a ten who can create chances aplenty for our front three and also chip in with 10 goals of his own. Is Willian that player?
I can't help but feel that Christian Eriksen is a better fit. I'd describe Willian as a creator. Eriksen is more of a playmaker. To me that's why Eriksen has always played behind the striker, while Willian has played most of his career on the left. Those are their best respective positions, and I feel strongly that we really need a ten who is a strong playmaker and who also might chip in with 10 goals for the season.
As such, Eriksen strikes me as our ideal player. He's creative and I think is the type of player that will help us to break down teams that park the bus - a persistent problem that if you get down to it, was the cause of us not securing fourth last year.
And if we screw over Liverpool again, all the better. :-)
