This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.
Tottenham Hotspur may or may not be able to sign Fabio Coentrao, who we wrote about earlier. Even if they can't get him, they probably want to sign a left back of some kind, since they've had Benoit Assou-Ekotto banished from the training ground this August. Coentrao's the only left back we've been seriously linked with, but that doesn't mean much. We signed Christian Eriksen less than two days after rumors popped up.
With that in mind, here are a few names that you might spot on Twitter and message boards at some point today.
Leighton Baines: Might as well lead with the obvious, huh? It seems like Manchester United will get one of Baines and Fellaini or neither, but you never know. Maybe Baines is willing to stay if Fellaini is, but once Fellaini's sold, he'll get angry and want out? Maybe by that time, United already have Coentrao or decide they don't need a left back. Crazier things have happened. But stiil. Verdict: Highly unlikely.
Ben Davies: It's highly unlikely that Swansea are going to sell this late in the window. They might even call our bid 'derisory'. But hey, they still have Neil Taylor, who's on his way back from injury. Also, we could buy Neil Taylor. He's pretty good. Verdict: Naa.
Cheikh M'Bengue: Toulouse are still pretty goshdang broke, even after we paid them good money for Etienne Capoue. M'Bengue is a versatile and experienced left back, but at 25, his best years are probably still in front of him. He's got a bit of a mean streak to him. Verdict: Wouldn't be shocking.
Alvaro Pereira: He's worked with AVB before. He's got a great left foot. He's experienced, He's still just 27. He didn't play for Inter Milan today and I bet they'd sell him if they got a decent offer. He also can't defend a damn snail. Verdict: NO GOD NO PLEASE NO. Like Danny Rose only worse at everything.
Eliaquin Mangala: He's not really a left back, but maybe that's a good thing? He's actually a central defender primarily, but a competent left back. Alex Sandro is the starting left back and Porto seem to prefer Maicon and Nicolas Otamendi in the middle. Diego Reyes was just purchased too. They might want to cash in. Verdict: Only preferable if Kaboul had an injury setback, fingers crossed.
Guilherme Siqueira: What if Real Madrid decide not to sell Coentrao after all? Well, we could just buy the guy Madrid was going to buy as his replacement. Pozzo still wants to get paid. Verdict: Not crazy and not a bad signing. Could actually be a thing.
