Potential Tottenham Hotspur departures: Emmanuel Adebayor

Robert Cianflone

The Togolese striker has been tapped for a move away from Spurs since his disaster of a campaign in 2012-13.

This post is part of a deadline morning series on potential Tottenham transfers. You can find all of the posts in the series right here, as well as the initial post explaining this series right here.

Pity poor Emmanuel Adebayor. Once considered the savior of Tottenham's faltering attack after his outstanding loan from Manchester City back in 2011-2012, he never really lived up to the hype and suffered through a rather dismal campaign last year. Ade's always had the reputation – deserved or not – of only playing hard when he's trying to get a new contract. I'm not sure I believe that, but it's certainly played out in that way during his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur. While he played quite well and worked his tail off last year after his return from the African Cup of Nations, unfortunately that effort never translated into goals.

Maybe because of this, Ade's been linked for a move away from north London for pretty much the entire transfer window. Turkish sides Besiktas and Fenerbahce are said to be very interested in signing him, and more recently he's been linked to Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga.

We haven't seen much of Ade lately; he was granted a period of compassionate leave away from the club after the recent death of his brother, but nobody's talking much about whether that leave is up, and why Ade's not been featuring at all for the club thus far this season. Maybe he's simply not fit. Maybe it's something else entirely.

Quick bio: Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor is a Togolese striker who rose to stardom anchoring the front line for Arsenal and later for Manchester City. A bit of a hot-head, he fell out of favor with Roberto Mancini and came to Spurs in 2010 on loan where he scored 17 goals in all competitions. Tottenham bought him outright at the beginning of the 2012-13 season.

Age: 29

Likelihood he'll play if he stays: Meh

Potential suitors: Besiktas, Fenerbahce, Schalke

Price if he's sold: Hopefully £10m or so. Double-digits would be nice.

Loan or sale?: Sale. Ade's wages are a millstone around most club's neck, but he's already at £100k/wk plus whatever Manchester City is still paying him. No use keeping him around with those wages if he's not going to play.

The verdict - Will he be an active Spurs player on September 3?: 50/50, quite honestly. Ade played sporadically in the preseason, but hasn't even been on the side in the matches Tottenham have played so far this year. He'd be firmly ensconced behind Roberto Soldado in the pecking order, and would probably be relegated to Europa and cup duties except in the case of injury. If Spurs can find a team that will take him and his wages off the bill, it wouldn't surprise in the least to see him depart before the end of the window.
