He’s beautiful, powerful and in many other ways indistinguishable from less-heralded cousin Superman. On Saturday, he displayed every quality I want from a Spurs captain.
Forget the views of dark-hearted villain Jose Mourinho, whose every utterance is predicated on self-aggrandisement and a desire to unsettle rivals. An honest manager would have thanked his lucky stars Fernando Torres didn’t go earlier for ‘the claw’, that could yet see him receive two reds for the same game.
But Mourinho did unwittingly compliment our star No5, referring to him as "special" and revealing the attention shown to him in previous games. This had echoes of Aussie paceman Glenn Mcgrath’s targeting of the best English batsman in Ashes series.
The loss of Gareth Bale has impacted many players in different ways, from Andros Townsend’s shotaholism to Holtby’s composure, but Jan Vertonghen has evolved into our natural leader. This was evident form the early interviews, calling out our attack for not making more of the platform provided by the unparalleled defence.
Saturday saw him up against a 2008 model Torres, no doubt inspired by the type of man-to-man pep talk that is such a significant part of Dark Lord Mourinho’s success. Our man rose to the challenge superbly, did not give an inch, and gave as good as he got in the intimidation stakes of the key battle that you could not take your eyes off.
Loved the dismissive gestures, the contemptuous shoves, all the while keeping his discipline without sacrificing a whiff of intensity. This man does not buckle, just an awesome blend of physique and technique.
A while back he would have been logical cover at LB, but that is unthinkable now that he has become the foundation at the heart of defence, and the team. Better an iffy Kyle Naughton than to disrupt our greatest asset.
At some point this season Daws may well give way to Kaboul or Chiriches. Jan will not be dropped while there is air in his lungs and a side-parting in his hair. Make this man our captain and let him continue to give heart and soul to representing our club in the best possible way.
