La Quenelle, a 100% unknown french gesture till last week-end's Anelka's celebration, was responsable for many English reactions. So here's some information :
Some years ago, la Quenelle, was used as a funny gesture, a kind of "fuck the establissment". The meaning changed, in 2009, when Dieudonné(meaning Given by God) a french humorist having used the term already in his shows put it in an electoral poster.Dieudonné was then, on the top of the PAS, Parti Antisioniste list for the European campaign élections. The gesture's new meaning was "against all lobies", the Jewish one on top.
His popularity made lots of sportsmen, as Samir Nasri, Tony Parker and many others to be pictured with him making this gesture. They disowned him, a long time ago, but appearently Anelka 's not. When he declared that it was a gesture of supporting his friend Dieudonné, it's because the humorist is in trouble with the french goverment, which trying to find a legal reason to stop the shows, in which he attacks singers (Patrick Bruel) and journalists( Patrick Cohen) of jewish ascendance.
Would that be possible? French law doesn't forbid any gesture, even the Nazi salute; but if the gesture is meant as an insult ex. making the Nazi salute in a Jewish Cemerery, then is punished by the Court .France's Parlement member, Meyer Habid, is trying to find a legal loophole to forbid Dieudonné's shows with the agreement of Manuel Valls, the minister de l 'Interieur.
Time, will tell. Let's hope that FA will take that seriously and do what's needed.
