Ahh, remember back to the heady days of early September, with Spurs in 2nd place and with transfer business closed, looking forward to seeing a central midfield trio of Sandro (Capoue backup), Paulinho (Dembele backup) and Eriksen (Holtby backup) boss the park for the rest of the campaign back into the Champs League.
Not sure why I punished myself by doing so, but went back and reviewed the starting 11 for every EPL match this season. Clearly we've had a significant number of injury issues, and our managerial position has been a cavalcade of WTF, but I was still surprised to see that there was not a single game started by Sandro, Paulinho and Eriksen together as a midfield 3. There wasn't a single game started by Capoue, Paulinho, and Eriksen as a midfield 3. There wasn't a sinlgle game started by Sandro, Dembele and Eriksen as a midfield 3. The closest we got was 4 games started by Sandro, Paulinho and Holtby, which resulted in 2 wins, a draw at Everton, and the disaster at the Etihad.
Sandro and Capoue started 1 game together. No, it wasnt to set up to defend and counter against LFC, Man City or Chelsea (that would actually make sense) - but instead to defend against those intrepid attackers from Fulham.
We've had a disaster of a season, and the management of our midfield has been one of the worst blunders, IMO. However, it also gives me some hope for the future under a real manager, as it will nice to actually see the midfield that the team spent a quarter of the Bale money on.
