The FA Cup is a football tournament with which the home side Tottenham Hotspur share a proud history. Their opponents came in the shape of fellow London club Charlton Athletic. This cup encounter also saw the return of former Tottenham midfielder, Johnnie Jackson.
Charlton contained their Premier League opponents in the first 45 minutes, without consistently threatening the Tottenham goal.
Luka Modric replaced Wilson Palacios and the goals soon came about in the second half when the lively Andros Townsend drilled home a 20 yard shot in the 49th minute. Townsend’s loan at Ipswich Town was recently cut short and he was clearly in a mood to impress not only the home crowd but Tottenham’s manager Harry Redknapp.
Jermain Defoe soon got on the score sheet in the 58th minute when he put a venomous shot into the Charlton net after he received a nice pass from Niko Kranjcar. Defoe got on the score sheet again in the 60th minute, when he placed a left footed shot into the Charlton net after his initial shot was blocked.
Charlton will now concentrate on hiring a manager and solidifying a place in the League One Play-Offs.
