I think I'm a pretty generous guy. I give my time to this blog for free. I write posts and articles that I hope will be thought provoking and interesting. I contribute to the discussion on this site. I spend several hours each week participating in, editing, and posting a pretty damn good podcast. Did I mention I do all this for FREE?
Well, if you think I do a good job here on this site and you want to reward me something more meaningful than Rec's I have a suggestion for you. Support my efforts to raise awareness for men's health issues by participating in or donating to my Movember team. Big Thanks to johnf34 for being the first to donate!
Many of you may be asking, "What is Movember?" Well, remember No-Shave November? It's kind of like that. A Mo is Australian slang for moustache and I will be spending the whole month of November cultivating a glorious moustache to rival that of the Tottenham Hotspur greats (see here for examples). With my mo' I will be helping to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.
Now, like I said, I don't ask for much. Sure, I've asked for Roman Pavlyuchenko memes and 1000 comments in a game thread, but that's pretty much it. So now I'm asking you for your donations or your participation and fundraising efforts. If you don't want to grow a moustache, either because your facial hair is ugly or because your significant other will kill you, please donate to my efforts here.
But, if your significant other is ok with your facial hair and your boss probably won't fire you then I encourage you to join me by participating in Movember on team Cartilage Free Captain. That's right. I've set up a Movember team just for us. You can join it by clicking here.

So, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that if you choose to donate the money will go straight to the "Help Bryan Pay For Law School Fund". This couldn't be further from the truth. Funds raised will help make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Through the Movember Foundation and their men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG, Movember is funding world class awareness, research, educational and support programs which would otherwise not be possible.
The other question on your mind may be, "Why is this so important?" Well, think about it this way. There's a whole month devoted to breast cancer awareness. Why can't there be a whole month for men's cancer awareness? Think about some of these statistics:
- 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
- A man is diagnosed with prostate cancer every 2.2 minutes
- 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
- 24% of men are less likely to go the doctor compared to women
Starting to see why this is so important now? Since Movember's creating in 2003 the organization has raised $174 million for cancer research. This blog has 600 members and receives thousand of unique visitors everyday. If each member were to donate one dollar that would be a great start! If some of you chose to participate as well and do your own fundraising we could make an even greater impact!
With that in mind I'm challenging my fellow authors and the commentariate to join me in Movember. Donate to the cause or (and this is my preference) join my team and grow your own Mo. At the end of the month we share our epic (or in my case abysmal) 'staches and have a good laugh. Here are the links again: DONATE and JOIN THE TEAM.
