Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Rumors: Barcelona To Bid For Spurs Star

Spanish Giants Barcelona seem set to test Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy's resolve on star midfielder Gareth Bale. Sources believe the Catalan club are readying a £35 million bid for the Welsh winger, whom manager Pep Guardiola sees as the long-term replacement for left-backs Eric Abidal and Adriano.

Where are these rumors coming from? Well, it would seem that Barca's top scout Albert Valentine was at Tottenham's match against Fulham. He certainly wasn't there to watch Clint Dempsey or Bobby Zamora. This isn't the first time Bale has been linked with a big move abroad. Over the summer he was linked with Inter Milan.

£35 million is a hell of a lot of money for a club to spend in the January window, but I doubt it will be enough to sway Levy. Tottenham received at least one big money bid over the summer for Luka Modric, allegedly for £40 million. Modric is still a Spurs player and, as a result, I doubt that Levy would be keen to accept less than £40 million to Bale.

To be honest, I'm not sure if Bale fits in at Barcelona. Dani Alves plays "wing-back" on the right flank, but the Brazilian is more winger than defender. Bale would be more of the same and might place an undue amount of pressure on Barcelona's backline. Bale could potential play left wing for Barca. Usual starter David Villa has been off form for a while now, but Bale doesn't quite provide the same goal scoring ability as the Spaniard.
