London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea locked horns at Stamford Bridge, in what turned out to be a fractious game of football. Premier League points and local pride were at stake today. This was evident throughout the game.
Chelsea imposed themselves on the visitors early on, leaving Tottenham to be a little tentative and ponderous in their attacks. However in the 19th minute, it was the away side which took the lead in fabulous fashion. Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart flicked the ball over his head from a throw-in straight into Sandro’s path. Sandro duly controlled the ball and unleashed a superb shot straight into the Chelsea net. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, was too pre-occupied with drilling further tactical instructions into his side rather than celebrate Tottenham’s lead. However, Frank Lampard soon equalised for Chelsea in the 45th minute, thanks to an error from Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes. Lampard struck the ball into Gomes, the Tottenham goalkeeper then derived to spill the ball through his legs and ‘across’ the goal line. The goal was given and Tottenham were obviously furious.
In the second half, both sides exchanged counter-attacks. Neither side created clear cut chances. However, in the 89th minute, Salomon Kalou stroke the ball into the Tottenham net off a Didier Drogba erroneous shot. Cue bedlam within Stamford Bridge and depression amongst Tottenham’s travelling support. Tottenham will feel hard done by due to the manner of the goals conceded, Chelsea won’t care in the slightest. Chelsea continue their late title assault, whilst Tottenham are left fighting for 5th place in the Premier League.
