Birmingham City visited White Hart Lane in the final round of Premier League games on Sunday afternoon. Birmingham was seeking to avoid relegation, whilst the hosts were looking to confirm their Europa League spot.
The first half was without much incident. Tottenham had the lion’s share of possession, near to 70%. Relegation threatened Birmingham lacked a creative outlet of any sort and therefore resorted to smothering the Tottenham midfield.
The second half is inevitably when the action kicked in. Roman Pavlyuchenko put Tottenham ahead with a sumptuous strike just after 49 minutes leaving Ben Foster stranded. The away side continued to toil and got their equaliser through Craig Gardner in the 79th minute with a well aimed drive from outside the area. Once Birmingham got level, they seemed content with their point as news filtered in of their temporary safety in the Premier League due to scores elsewhere. However, Pavlyuchenko went and ruined Birmingham’s hope of any safety in the top tier. He carried the ball forward and proceeded to thump the ball home in the 93rd minute, thus confirming the visitors' Championship plight.
Tottenham will now focus on a likely squad overhaul whilst planning for another assault on 4th place in the Premier League next season.
