Tottenham Hotspur's Best XI Of The Decade: Left Back Benoit Assou-Ekotto

The newest addition to Tottenham Hotspur's Best XI of the Decade is French-born Cameroonian left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto. As mentioned in the initial post full back in general has been a tricky position for Tottenham Hotspur to fill over the last decade, but Assou-Ekotto has provided Tottenham Hotspur with consistently solid performances since joining from RC Lens.

Many of us here at Cartilage Free Captain have, over the years, fallen in love with Assou-Ekotto's approach to the game of football. He is very frank in his belief that football is just a job. Plus, he drives a smart car and takes the tube in London, which is pretty odd.

On the field Assou-Ekotto's tireless work on the left flank has been a boon to the club. His overlapping combination with Gareth Bale has worked superbly for the last year and a half. His crossing from deep positions is good, and of course there's this goal against Liverpool. As mentioned in the initial post, Assou-Ekotto's defending may, at times, leave something to be desired, but if I were pressed I'm not sure I could name too many (I think 3, maybe 4) left backs in the Premier League better than him. He has been effective against some of the best players in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo included.

At this point, Benoit Assou-Ekotto is only 27 years old and still has some solid years ahead of him at Spurs, this season may be a defining time for the Cameroonian with Danny Rose nipping at his heels for a spot in the starting lineup. Regardless, he is in our Best XI of the Decade.
