In what was our closest vote to date, only three votes separated the top three, I am proud to present you with the left back on Tottenham Hotspur's Worst XI of the Decade: Gilberto.
Gilberto da Silva Melo joined Spurs on January 31, 2008 from Hertha Berlin for almost £2 million. It would take him a couple of months to finally make his debut, partially due to injury (and also probably partially due to not being very good), but when he did finally play his quality was evident. At the time of his debut he became the first Brazilian to play at the senior level for Tottenham Hotspur. Gilberto stayed with the club until July of 2009, at which point his contract was mutually terminated. Gilberto, miraculously, still plies his trade for Brazillian club Cruzerio.
I'm not sure what I'll remember most about Gilberto. Probably the astounding fact that he's been capped by Brazil 35 times (did you know he played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup?). If not that then I'll definitely remember that in 3 of his first 6 starts for club he was substituted at halftime.
I can only hope that Damien Comolli and Jaunde Ramos were confused when they acquired Gilberto and thought they were acquiring former Arsenal player Gilberto Silva. Though I'm pretty sure I would have liked that signing less.
Congratulations Gilberto. You might be the worst Brazilian footballer ever.
