The season has now been over for more than a month, players are being bought and sold left and right (or at least that's how it feels) and Tottenham Hotspur have still yet to do anything, aside from sign some old American. All the reports that I'm seeing on various blogs and message boards are attributing this lack of activity to an impasse in the relationship between Harry Redknapp and club chairman Daniel Levy.
Yes, I'm well aware that ITK sources on message boards are to be taken with a grain of salt as are most blogs (not this one of course), especially Bleacher Report. Those guys suck. However, if there's any truth to the stalemate rumors Tottenham are in big trouble. Levy, apparently, wants to offload players first to cut the wage bill and free up more money. Harry wants to buy now. Additionally Levy wants to buy young players that can help the club, like Leandro. Harry wants old players that we don't need, like Scott Parker and Joe Cole
Honestly, I don't care what Spurs do at this point I just want us to do something. Something that shows a commitment to competing for Champions League places and winning trophies. Even if that something is buy Scott Parker or Joe Cole.
It seems as though the transfer rumors, as they relate to Spurs, have stagnated. I haven't seen any new names. It seems to be just re-hashes of the old rumors. I'll do my best to satisfy your need for transfer rumors, but it seems like the papers are on auto-pilot at this point.
Mr. Danielle Lloyd Is On The Move: The number of interesting WAGS is slowly dwindling at White Hart Lane (we still have Sylvie Van der Vaart), but now that Jamie O'Hara and his fiance Danielle Lloyd are officially leaving Spurs. The 24 year-old joins Wolverhampton Wanderers on a £5 million deal. No, this isn't a rumor because it's on our official site, but it's good, right? I always like O'Hara. I thought he was a good squad player to have, but if the lad wants first team football then a lower tier club like Wolves will be a good fit for him.
Let The Conspiracy Theories Begin: Some people have been doing a very careful reading of Daniel Levy's statement about the departure of Luka Modric and have discovered that Daniel said:I wish to make it absolutely clear, as I have said previously, that none of our key players will be sold this summer.
He said SUMMER! That means Luka could go this winter. Bale could go in January too! Damn you Daniel Levy. You are on sneaky son of a gun. Honestly, I'm not too bothered by this, but some folks are up in arms. The January window is always a tough time to buy top players because teams have, generally, used most of their transfer funds, but I suppose it will all depend on what our form is like to start the season and what the offer, if there is one, is like come January.
#WeNeedAStriker: Spurs continue to be heavily linked with Espanyol Striker Pablo Osvaldo and we've talked about that at length in these posts. We've apparently renewed our interested in Ipswich striker Connor Wickham now that Porto's Radamel Falcao seems out of the question. The name that is newest (or at least that I've seen least often) is Roma's Mirko Vucinic. The Italian club want £18 million for the Montenegro international. Which given the choice between that and £30 million for Giuseppe Rossi, I'd take Rossi.
By Far The Dumbest Rumor Of The Week: I was hesitant to include this rumor at all, but I feel like in times of stress we all need a laugh. Jermain Defoe has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Harry Redknapp has since come out and rubbished the rumor, but that doesn't really mean much. This rumor isn't dumb because Spurs wouldn't sell him to Arsenal, I really think Spurs would be willing to unload Defoe on whomever is willing to pay a reasonable amount for him. It's dumb because there is no way that Arsene Wenger and Arsenal want or need Defoe. Arsenal are an elite club and while, on his day, Defoe is quite good, Arsenal simply should be attracting a different class of player. Besides, Defoe is neither young nor French. No way Wenger signs him.
Player We're Not Being Linked With But Should Be: Ok, let's assess the clubs weaknesses: striker, right back, and cover at left back and both wide midfield positions. Let's assume Danny Rose will be cover at both left back and left midfield and we probably won't sell either David Bentley or Giovani Dos Santos, not because we don't want to, but because we suck at selling people. The fixes the later two problems. We always look at strikers, so who's the right back we should be being linked with? I'm going to go with Standard Liege's Daniel Opare. Players in the Belgian league seem to be all the rage this transfer window, particularly players from Standard. Opare is only 20 years old, but would be a great fit for the club. He's a pacy, attacking fullback, so if used in rotation with Vedran Corluka or Younes Kaboul he'd be an excellent foil and should eventually be able to take over.
Player We're Actually Going To Sign...This Week: It was mentioned in the Hoddle of Coffee this morning, but Gary Cahill from Bolton seems like a real possibility. Bolton Wanderers had a pretty good season and if they manage to hold on to their players could be in for big things under Owen Coyle, but if we've made a £17 million plus a player bid, which is an absolutely stupid amount, Bolton have to take it. The central defender is only 25 and seems to be in demand by a number of big clubs. A central defender is probably the last thing we need, but I doubt that will stop Harry from buying him. Also, £17 million plus Younes Kaboul and Sebastien Bassong is just dumb. Where do these people get these ideas?
