The next player to feature in the ‘Get to know a youth star’ segment is Mr. Andros Townsend.
Townsend is only 19 years of age and has been our youth books since 2007. Townsend has had numerous loans (too many for my liking) and is keen to make an impact either in the first team set-up or on an extended season long loan with a Championship club.
Andros Townsend is a young footballer of whom I’ve admired for a long time. He’s a natural left footed player and plies his trade as an out and out left winger. The type of winger who’ll hug the touchline, hit the by-line and drift inside if need be.
He scored a neat goal at the Ricoh Arena whilst on loan with Millwall this season. The goal was more impressive as he scored with his weaker right foot. It was refreshing to see a young professional comfortable on his weaker right foot. Too many left footed players are mistrusting of their right foot. It’s clear that Townsend spends time honing his skills at Spurs Lodge whilst at training.
I hope that Harry Redknapp insists that Townsend features regularly with whatever Championship club he’s destined to join on loan. If Townsend and our other starlets aren’t featuring regularly elsewhere, then they might as well stay at Spurs Lodge under Redknapp’s tutelage.
I won’t mention the other left footed starlet currently blocking his path, but if/when he gets injured/suspended/sold (take your pick) hopefully Redknapp gives Townsend another chance with the first team squad especially if Townsend impresses elsewhere. Townsend has showed glimpses of his talent on Redknapp’s watch. In Townsend’s last outing in Tottenham Hotspur colours, he was a star in the FA Cup 3rd Round defeat of Charlton Athletic where he scored and created a hatful of chances. Look out for Townsend to feature regularly in our pre-season matches.
