We've learned two things today. One, Tottenham really do want Juan Mata. We already pretty much knew that, but we are dense and need to hear it a couple dozen times to be sure. Well, Harry Redknapp has confirmed Spurs interest in the Spaniard so yes, they are really going after him. The second thing we learned is very much like the first one in that we are dense and need to hear things a couple dozen times to be sure. Daniel Levy handles all transfers for the club.
Redknapp spoke with reporters on Saturday and made clear that Spurs are chasing Mata. He also confirmed that he just stares at his phone and waits for Levy to call and tell him if we signed a player so if you eat a bacon sandwich and stare at Twitter waiting to heard if Spurs signed a player then you're almost exactly like 'Arry.
"[Mata] is a player that we like," Redknapp said. "So do Arsenal and so do other clubs. I went to watch him when England Under-21 played Spain and I thought he looked fantastic.
"The chairman has been dealing with it so where it is I don't know – I don't deal with them transfers. I wouldn't want to say that it isn't happening in case we sign him tomorrow and you all say 'thanks Harry', but he's a player we like."
Spurs will still have to convince Mata to sign with them. Depending on the report, Arsenal have either met or will meet the €21 million release clause in Mata's contract, so the decision will be Mata's. Arsenal and Valencia are both in the Champions League so getting Mata to pick Spurs will be very difficult, but they have bid €25 million for him so the hope is that Valencia pressures Mata into choosing a move to White Hart Lane.
