It's no surprise that Tottenham Hotspur cannot compete with the top clubs for players. It's why we're stuck arguing whether or not Luka Modric will be sold instead of why (insert top player here) will be signed. Hearing about players Spurs bid on only for them to go elsewhere still hurts though so prepare your hearts because Harry Redknapp admitted that Tottenham were in on Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Stuart Downing before the trio chose destinations further north.
"Phil Jones is a fantastic young player," Redknapp told Sky Sports. "Everybody tried to sign him. We all offered £16 million for him, he is a player who has the lot. I tried to sign Young and Jones but when United are in the hunt it's very difficult for anyone else to get a look-in. I first made a move for Young three or four years ago and have been after him ever since."
Redknapp went on to say that wages got in the way of Downing's potential move to White Hart Lane. At least Redknapp and Daniel Levy have teamed up to bring in other players though...oh, wait. We're still Spurs.
