Following Rumors Of A Move To Serie A Sandro Signs Contract Extension

Earlier this week rumors were flying that Sandro could be headed to Serie A, specifically to Roma. These rumors weren't helped any by the fact that Sandro said he would like to play in Italy at some point. Now, Sandro has signed a five-year contract extension with Tottenham Hotspur, which runs through 2016.

I know, contract extensions don't mean much to players in this game. All one has to do is look at the Luka Modric transfer saga. However, it does seem like getting the Brazilian extended will mean he will be at Spurs for quite some time. I make this assumption based on chairman Daniel Levy's unwillingness to sell Modric. Should Sandro continue his development I would imagine Levy would be equally unwilling to part with him.

Keeping the young players and the core of the team under contract also serves to raise their asking price. A player with 5 years left on their contract has a bit more value than a player like Gary Cahill who is in the last year of his deal. So now and team that is interested in Sandro's services will have to pay a premium for the defensive midfielder's services.

I'm quite happy with this bit of business. I'm sure the extension includes a raise for Sandro, which may prevent him from "having his head turned" in the future. Hopefully, Sandro is a Spurs player for many years to come.
