New Zealand international Ryan Nelsen had his contract with Blackburn Rovers terminated on transfer deadline day, but it took until today for him to complete his move to Tottenham Hotspur. The 34 year-old defender spent 7 years at Blackburn making more than 200 appearances, but has now, according to Spurs' official site, moved on free to Tottenham Hotspur.

Details of Nelsen's contract have not been released, but one would have to assume that the deal is a pay-for-play type of deal. Nelsen has been limited this season by knee injury and made only one appearance for a Blackburn side that has been struggling near the bottom of the table.

For Spurs, Nelsen probably will not be anything more than emergency cover. With Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul, and, eventually, William Gallas, all available Nelsen would likely be fifth choice. The hope, I assume, is that his leadership and professionalism will be an asset to the club as they chase the two Manchester clubs for the title.

At first blush, I was against this move. However, after giving it some thought I'm in favor of it. Firstly, I doubt Nelsen will make that many appearances for the club. Second, his wages are almost certainly less than those of the man he replaces in our center back rotation, Sebastien Bassong. Finally, Nelsen's experience could be an asset to the club during this title chase.
