Tottenham 25 Man Squad Named With Some Surprise Inclusions

David Bentley: Needed Depth?

After the closing of the January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur had to name a new 25-man roster that is eligible to play in the Premiership for the rest of the season. The roster includes new acquisitions Louis Saha and Ryan Nelsen. But perhaps more interesting are a couple of old names that might now have to play a role in the Tottenham season.

Recently loaned out Spurs players David Bentley, Bongani Khumalo, and Simon Dawkins all made the 25 man squad. All are coming off loans of varying success. Simon Dawkins was the most successful, starring for a poor San Jose Earthquakes squad in the MLS. The 24-year old has yet to feature in a Spurs shirt, but his MLS performance has not only led Earthquakes manager Frank Yallop to pursue a full transfer for Dawkins, but also impress Harry Redknapp enough that Dawkins deserves a place in the squad.

Bentley has featured 42 times for Spurs since arriving in 2008. But the winger has yet to live up to the expectations of his £15 million purchase. Bentley had been loaned to West Ham earlier this season in pursuit of playing time, and Bentley got off to a bright start. But an October knee injury cancelled the loan and had Bentley's season in jeopardy. Apparently though Bentley's recovery is going better than expected and he could provide some wing depth after Steven Pienaar's loan.

Bongani Khumalo was loaned to Reading in the beginning of the season, but the South African International was an absolute bust, featuring only four times. Reading chose to cancel the loan, sending Khumalo back to Tottenham. Khumalo could provide some centerback depth, but don't be surprised if Khumalo heads back out on loan to a lower division club this month.
