Don't believe the myth that good strikers are too expensive and that Tottenham Hotspur don't have good options. It's absolute nonsense.
Newcaslte signed Demba Ba last summer for free. He scored 16 league goals this season.
Newcastle signed Papiss Cisse in January for £10m. In 33 league games, between the Bundesliga and Premier League, he scored 22 goals.
Fenerbahce paid €10 million for Moussa Sow in January. He scored seven goals in 12 appearances for them, finishing with 13 league goals. He also scored three goals in the Champions League.
Porto paid an undisclosed fee, almost certainly less than eight figures, for Marc Janko in January. He scored five goals in 12 appearances for them, helping them to a title. He finished the year with 15 goals in 28 league matches across two leagues.
Chinese side Guangzhou Everglade paid €8.5 million for Lucas Barrios this spring. His wages were almost certainly the primary factor in his decision, but they are in the neighborhood of £100k per week. I find it hard to believe that Barrios was dead-set on going to China.
Eren Derdiyok, who has scored 25 goals in 90 matches for Bayer Leverkusen, recently transferred to Hoffenheim for an undisclosed fee. It was almost certainly less than eight figures.
Wolfsburg just signed Bas Dost, a 23-year-old 6'5" striker who scored 32 goals in 34 league matches for Heereneven. They'll probably sell Mario Mandzukic. He'll go to a mid-table team and score 10-12 goals next season. Everyone will say he would have scored more with better service.
Tottenham have supposedly bid for Loic Remy and Leandro Damiao. They didn't get either of them. There have been talks about bringing in Adebayor permanently. He hasn't signed.
We're linked to Luuk De Jong, Ola Toivonen, Dimitar Berbatov and Ba. We won't sign any of them. Because we're Spurs.
Happy Friday.
