BBC Reports Sigurdsson to Spurs Deal Near Completion

More news breaking on the Tottenham Hotspur transfer front, as the BBC is reporting that Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson (on loan with Swansea in 2012) is about to join Spurs. The deal would be for a reported £8 million, matching the €10m deal we reported yesterday. Sigurdsson is apparently undergoing a medical within the next 24 hours, but a deal is unlikely to be finished before July 1st.

Sigurdsson, 22, is coming off an excellent loan with Swansea City, where he scored seven times in 19 appearances for the club. The Icelandic international was first rumoured to transfer with Swansea City this offseason, and after manager Brendan Rodgers left the club Sigurdsson was rumoured to follow him to Liverpool. However, it seems Tottenham have outbid the Reds for the young attacking midfielder.

Sigurdsson is much more of a replacement for Rafael van der Vaart than rumoured Tottenham departure Luka Modric. A central attacking midfielder, Sigurdsson possesses a nice range of passing and an attacking mindset, with a powerful shot from deep. With rumours again swirling of Van der Vaart returning to Germany, it will be interesting to see if Sigurdsson is brought to be an apprentice... or immediate replacement.
