Centerback Ryan Nelsen, acquired from Blackburn Rovers in 2012, is rumoured to be returning to Tottenham Hotspur next season on a one-year option. Nelsen, 34, saw his contract expire at the end of this season and is currently a free agent. Nelsen played six times for Tottenham Hotspur this season, scoring once.

Nelsen had been linked to a return to his original MLS club DC United, but these rumours were stated to be false as he looked to stay in England. Nelsen has missed the current OFC Nations Cup with injury, but will be looked upon to captain the New Zealand Olympic Football team this summer.

Nelsen's return seems to likely be for depth and experience, with wages that match his aging and declining performance. Expect Nelsen to have a heavy influence on the younger Tottenham defenders, along with Ledley King and William Gallas. It also may signal that Harry Redknapp is trying to increase and retain his team's depth in preparation for another arduous run through the Europa League.

It will be interesting to see if Nelsen's return only furthers the rumours that have linked Steven Caulker to a repeat loan to Swansea City. However, after manager Brendan Rodgers departure from the Swans, that move is now in doubt.
