Tottenham Hotspur kick off their preseason with a friendly against League One side Stevenage on Wednesday, not that anyone wants you to know about it. There hasn't been any mention of the game on Tottenham's official website since they announced the date change to July 18, which was well over a month ago. There is no news article about the preseason game, no team news post, nothing from Andre Villas-Boas, and most incredibly, no mention of the game or any other preseason game on the club's schedule.
Here's what we do know. Tom Huddlestone, Michael Dawson, Jermaine Jenas, William Gallas and Younes Kaboul have been training. How hard they've been training and how ready they are for action, we don't know. Gareth Bale and Kyle Walker are dealing with injuries that caused their withdrawal from the Olympics, so they're out at the moment. Players who participated in Euro 2012 aren't around. That's Jermain Defoe, Scott Parker, Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart. Also missing are the guys who are on Olympic squads. That's Steven Caulker, Danny Rose, Sandro and Giovani dos Santos. Harry Kane just got back from the UEFA U-19 championships, and I have no idea whether or not he will be able to play today.
These guys probably won't be making an appearance today against Stevenage because they played against Kingstonian on Monday. Here's the team from that game.
Spurs XI (4-2-3-1): Miles (Archer, 46); Byrne, Hall (Ekong, 68), Veljkovic, Stewart; Bentaleb, Gomelt; Pritchard (Barthram, 58), Mason, Ceballos (Munns, 58); Bostock.
I believe we're left with the following players at least somewhat available, pending fitness, for today's match.
GK Gomes
GK Brad Friedel
GK Carlo Cudicini
GK David Button
DF Younes Kaboul
DF William Gallas
DF Kyle Naughton
DF Sebastien Bassong
DF Benoit Assou-Ekotto
DF Jan Vertonghen
DF Adam Smith
MF Tom Huddlestone
MF Aaron Lennon
MF Jake Livermore
MF Andros Townsend
MF David Bentley
MF Jermaine Jenas
MF Gylfi Sigurdsson
MF Iago Falque Silva
MF Tom Carroll
MF Ryan Fredericks
MF Massimo Luongo
MF Dean Parrett
MF Jake Nicholson
FW Harry Kane
FW Cameron Lancaster
FW Jonathan Obika
Based on all that info, here's my projected starting XI for the game against Stevenage today.
Tottenham Hotspur Projected Lineup (4-3-3): Cudicini; Assou-Ekotto, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Naughton; Livermore, Carroll, Sigurdsson; Townsend, Lancaster, Lennon
The game is streaming wherever the hell your lucky behind can find a stream to watch. I'm not encouraging illegal activity, I'm just not exactly sure where to catch the game, if there's anywhere to catch the game. Hopefully Windy and/or some of the fine folks from The Fighting Cock message boards are on hand to tell us all about the game. Kickoff is at 7:45 p.m. local time, 2:45 p.m. ET from Broadhall Way in Stevenage.
