Tottenham Hotspur heads north to take on Carlisle United in the third round of the League Cup. Let's list all of the things we know about Carlisle United:

  1. They play at Brunton Park, which is the largest stadium in England that isn't all-seated with a capacity of 18,202.
  2. The club doesn't have much expectation of rising too far above their current place in League One because they are planning a new stadium and it will hold just 12,000.
  3. Their nickname is the Cumbrians and Blues.
  4. They have a loanee named Kallum Higginbotham. Which. Is. Awesome.
  5. Frankie Simek plays for them so go America.
  6. In 10th place and sitting on three wins, three draws and two losses, Carlisle are pretty much super duper average.

Riveting stuff from Carlisle, who have sold 11,410 seats at last check and are left with primarily standing spots left to sell. They expect the ground to be full so the little club with a full stadium behind them taking on the big, bad Premier League boys narrative will be in full effect.

Spurs will not turn to their best XI, though. After playing on consecutive weekends with a Europa League match thrown in last week, Andre Villas-Boas will use the League Cup to rest some players. Gareth Bale, Brad Friedel and William Gallas all figure to be out of the team at Brunton Park.

Time off for them means chances for others. Steven Caulker should get the nod in defense, his second start after performing well in the Europa League, while Tom Huddlestone, Michael Dawson and Andros Townsend are all good bets to make their first starts of the season.

As has been the case for weeks now, Emmanuel Adebayor, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Scott Parker, Jake Livermore and Younes Kaboul are all out through injury. Kyle Naughton's foot is still giving him problems so he will miss out on the match too.
