Tottenham Hotspur have failed to score in yet another game, and this one stung more than others. A giveaway in the first half led to a goal by Loic Remy and Spurs were never able to hit back. Despite putting 14 shots on target, they never scored and Newcastle held on for a 1-0 victory.
We'll get to more level-headed and thorough analysis of this game at some point, but that was tough to take.
Spurs got off to a brilliant start and were well in control until the goal. It came from a terrible giveaway in midfield by Paulinho, which caught the defense behind him out of position and unable to recover. Yoan Gouffran found Loic Remy, who rounded Brad Friedel and finished.
Andre Villas-Boas made two substitutions at halftime, bringing on Younes Kaboul for the injured Vlad Chiriches and Sandro for the ineffective Mousa Dembele. Sandro had a massive influence on the game and allowed Tottenham to completely control the second half, but it led to no goals. Partially because of poor shooting, partially because of Tim Krul.
The Newcastle goalkeeper made 14 saves on the day, a couple of which went above and beyond what is normally expected of decent goalkeepers. Poor finishing or not from Spurs,14 saves is an impressive number.
There were too many big chances to count in the second half and Krul kept out all of them. We now have nine goals from 11 games.
