Sky Sports understands that there is a "chance" that Tottenham Hotspur could turn to former Ajax, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal to take over for the recently sacked Andre Villas-Boas. The 62-year-old is currently in charge of the Dutch national team, but his contract expires after this summer's World Cup and van Gaal may be looking to make a return to club management.
Van Gaal, however, has made it clear that he is not willing to split time between club and National management. The Dutch team have only two friendlies between now and the end of the Premier League season, but it does not seem likely that the Dutch FA would be willing to allow their manager to depart before such an important tournament or that the manager himself would do so.
A further sticking point seems to be the belief that van Gaal would not be willing to work under a technical director like Franco Baldini. In order to take the job, van Gaal would have to be afforded complete control, something Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy might not be inclined to do, given his stated preference for a more continental style of club structure.
While van Gaal is certainly an experienced and successful manager and one who would has shown a lot of tactical flexibility over the years, he has always played an attacking and open style of play, which would certainly be preferable to Tottenham Hotspur fans. At 62, however, van Gaal may not be a man that sticks in management too much longer. Tottenham are a club that strive for long-term stability and hiring a manager that will leave in a few years and firing their technical director does not mesh with that goal. The biggest problem is his unwillingness to take the job now. Tottenham need a new manager soon and van Gaal is content to make Spurs wait.
