Dinamo Tbilisi vs. Tottenham Hotspur preview: The great Europa adventure begins

What's a Dinamo? And does it matter?

Christopher Lee

The Europa League is back, which means it's time to debate whether or not Tottenham Hotspur should prioritize the competition. The club spent each of the last two years in the competition so this should be a quick and painless discussion.

The Europa League is important and should be ignored because it is amazing, but it's a secondary competition that should die, although every chance at winning a trophy is good and the club really needs to prioritize finishing top four in the league.

So yes, the Europa League does(n't) matter.

Spurs' (un)important Europa League campaign begins on Thursday in Georgia, where they will take on Dinamo Tbilisi in the first leg of their playoff. Here are a few things we know about Dinamo:

  1. They were established in 1936.
  2. They won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1981.
  3. They won the Georgian Premier League last year.
  4. Their new owner is rich and is building lots of new things for the club.
  5. They haven't made the group stage since of European competition since 2004.
  6. Their manager has a strong bowl cut.
So that's who Spurs (a Jan Vertonghen and Aaron Lennon-less Spurs) are playing. It's hugely important. Or not.

Match date/time: Thursday, August 22; 12 p.m. ET/8 p.m. GMT

Venue: Boris Paichadzis Erovnuli Stadioni, Tbilisi, Georgia

TV: Good luck.
