Tottenham needed reinforcements in defense following the sale of Steven Caulker to Cardiff. Spurs have now replaced Caulker with a classy ball-playing defender in the mold of Jan Vertonghen. Chiriches cost Spurs a rumored €9.5 million and will likely be fourth choice for Tottenham, though he will see plenty of playing time in the various cup competitions.
Tottenham now have a fully fleshed out central defense with four experienced and capable central defenders. They also have a youngster in Zeki Fryers who could fill in if needed and Etienne Capoue, who is not primarily a central defender, but can play if necessary. This squad is really starting to take shape.
