According to John Cross of the Mirror, Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao looks unlikely to make a move to Tottenham Hotspur. Andre Villas-Boas is apparently pretty keen on the Portuguese international, but Real Madrid are blocking a move.
Here's what Cross said on The Mirror's deadline day liveblog:
"Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has had a last minute move for Fabio Coentrao knocked back by Real Madrid ... Coentrao wanted to leave and Spurs were keen - particularly on a loan - as Villas-Boas does not rate Benoit Assou-Ekotto. Ancelotti said: 'I know that Fabio wants to play. But not all of the technical staff agree that he should leave. He is needed for the project.'"
If all we were offering was a loan for Coentrao and not a significant fee for a permanent deal, I can see why Real Madrid aren't too keen on letting him come to us. Obviously something might change if we pony up quite a bit of cash, but it's getting pretty late for that.
Anyone think this affects the potential loan move of Benoit Assou-Ekotto to QPR? Think another left back will come out of the woodwork?
