UPDATE: Catania reject bid
Emergency central defender time? Sky Italy are apparently reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are in for Catania central defender Nicolas Spolli. He's a decent enough player. He's also 30 and has never played at a big club.
Here's your boy Tancredi:
Tottenham have bid 7m £ for Catania's defender Spolli, according to Sky Italy
— Tancredi Palmeri (@tancredipalmeri) September 2, 2013
Gianluca Di Marzio then released a post on his site after Palmeri tweeted. I asked our resident Serie A experts at SB Nation to tell me what they thought about Spolli. Their initial responses:
Shaun Best: [Tancredi Palmeri] is full of shit most of the time.
Jack Sargeant: I'll be amazed if that's true
Uros Popovic: £7m for Spolli? Yeah right.
Okay, so that's not exactly what I was looking for. And i know Palmeri's a wind-up merchant masquerading as a journalist. When they were done yanking my chain, they noted that he has been a decent starter for Catania since he joined from Newell's Old Boys, but that he's probably not good enough to play regularly for Tottenham and that it's too much to pay for him. He was referred to as a 'mid-table defender'.
So, I can only assume this would be an emergency move because Younes Kaboul's fitness is iffy. Either that or Sky Italy is talking absolute crap.
