The sources of this information are dubious, but it's January 30th, so let's have some fun. According to French outlet Le10Sport and English paper Metro, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Manchester United winger Nani on loan for the rest of the season.
Spurs have a solid glut of wingers at the moment and are struggling to find the right combination. It doesn't help that Erik Lamela and Andros Townsend are both battling injuries. I'm not sure why Spurs need to add another winger, but if they're chasing Yevhen Konoplyanka, perhaps Sherwood doesn't rate the options he has and really wants to add some quality out wide.
I asked Callum Hamilton, editor of Manchester United blog The Busby Babe, what he thought of Nani and whether or not he could be a useful player for a decent Premier League side. Here's what he had to say.
Nani, despite how long he's been at Old Trafford, is still something of an unknown quantity. One phenomenal season in among a host of horribly inconsistent ones.
That best season, incidentally, was when Antonio Valencia was badly injured and he took up his position on the right wing -- although a two-footed player, he bizarrely seems only to be able to cross with his right while being better at shooting with his left, which obviously makes him far superior on the right than the left.
He's not much of a liability -- that part is overstated -- but he could easily be a very useful player if properly used. I think he'd fit into the Spurs setup quite nicely and give you something you don't have much of. Aaron Lennon has been shoved out then brought back by several Spurs managers because nobody else can bring what he does -- Nani is a bit like that, but a little more unpredictable. I think he'd be a good signing, and I hope we don't let it happen.
The emphasis on that last bit is mine, and why I think this won't happen. Manchester United are in a battle for fourth place with Tottenham Hotspur. Even if they're confident that they'll pass Spurs and wish they were in a battle for something more, that's the reality of their situation. As long as that's the case, it would be silly for them to strengthen Spurs. Surely he's not such a cancer with such high wages that he needs to be loaned out no matter what.
