Tottenham Hotspur team news: Three return for Hull, three more out

The Tottenham Hotspur defense and midfield got a boost, but the team is still short on the wings.

Tottenham Hotspur's depth in the center of defense just got a lot better. Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul will both make the trip to Hull City for this weekend's game after extended spells on the sidelines, with Paulinho joining them. All three players returned to training a week ago, but were held out of the mid-week match against Manchester City.

Unfortunately, three more Spurs players remain out. Sandro returned to training at the same time as Vertonghen, Kaboul and Paulinho, but is apparently coming along more slowly and will not suit up this weekend. Andros Townsend and Erik Lamela are still out and a return date hasn't been given for either player, though they're both expected back shortly.

If Vertonghen is fit enough to make the team, he's probably fit enough to start and it wouldn't be surprising to see him play alongside Michael Dawson or Vlad Chiriches in the Spurs defense. As Sherwood has noted in the past, they'll probably be a bit more careful with Younes Kaboul.

The Mirror is reporting that Mousa Dembele is in the provisional squad for Spurs, so it appears that the knock he took against City will not lead to him missing any time. This should help Paulinho, who won't need to be rushed back into the starting XI.
