Tottenham Hotspur look set to have quite a few players on a wide variety of teams in this summer's World Cup, with Nabil Bentaleb likely joining that list. According to the Algerian football federation, Bentaleb has committed his future to Algeria and will try to earn a World Cup place with the team.
Here's the key quotes from Algeria's statement, via ESPN FC.
"He has agreed to play for the country of his parents after meeting Algerian Football Federation president Mohamed Raouaraoua. Bentaleb will be called up for the next phase of the national team's preparations on March 1, ahead of the match against Slovenia on March 5 in Blida."
Bentaleb was born in France, but is eligible for Algeria through his parents. He has one France Under-19 cap, but has not been a regular part of their youth setup. He will apparently opt for the opportunity to play in a World Cup immediately instead of waiting to see if France includes him in their future plans in light of his emergence at Spurs.
While it will be excellent to see Bentaleb at the World Cup, It's not thrilling to lose another player during the March international break. Hopefully he and everyone else comes back in one piece.
