The draw for the Playoff Round of the 2014-15 Europa League tournament took place today at noon BST at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, and Tottenham now knows who its first opponent is: AEL Limassol.
Athlitiki Enosi Lemesou, otherwise known as AEL Limassol, otherwise known as just AEL, is a Cypriot team that plays in the Cypriot First Division. They finished second in the league last year behind APOEL, whom you might remember had a nice surprise run to the Champions League quarterfinals in 2012. AEL was in the Europa League in 2012-13, finishing last in their group, and they have also mucked around the qualifying rounds of the Champions League in years past, though they've never made the group stages.
I can't say I know much about the Cypriot First Division, nor about AEL Limassol. There's nobody on the squad whom I recognize. They strangely have a fair number of Brazilians on the team. They have a player named "Carlitos" from Cape Verde, whom I don't know but whose name sounds kinda cool. I have no idea what to expect from them, except that they probably -- PROBABLY -- shouldn't give us too much trouble and we'll almost certainly see a rotated-side-slash-the-kids.
Home and away matches will take place August 21 and 28. The first leg will take place in Cyprus, with the return fixture at White Hart Lane. Match times have not yet been announced.
We're going to Cyprus! Europa League, everybody. /golf clap
