Actual transfer news! German newspaper BILD reported today that Tottenham Hotspur has reached an agreement with Bundesliga side FC Köln for the transfer of Kevin Wimmer.
We previously reported that Spurs had reached personal terms with Wimmer, and that he had apparently visited England recently. According to BILD, the deal is a four-year contract worth €6m. The central defender is expected to join Spurs when the summer transfer window opens on June 9, 2015. Nothing has been formally announced by either club, so of course take any transfer news like this with a huge grain of salt until you see the tweet from @spursofficial, but the report (which is entirely in German) claims that a formal announcement is imminent.
This deal would be a pretty astute signing by Spurs. Wimmer is an Austrian national team defender, is young (only 22), and is highly regarded by Cologne. Bringing in a player like this likely means the departure of either Younes Kaboul or Vlad Chiriches.
It's another indication that Mauricio Pochettino is rebuilding Spurs from the ground up with young footballing talent with high ceilings. Even if Wimmer is only a depth signing initially, it's still a pretty good piece of business. Let's not start a .gif party quite yet, but if this bears out, this is some exciting news.
