Tottenham Hotspur will be extending their postseason spring tour this May. Spurs announced on their website that the club will be traveling to the far east to take on a Malaysian professional side in Kuala Lumpur on May 27 as part of an event titled the AIA Cup.
This match will take place three days before Spurs' trip to Sydney to take on Australian League side Sydney FC on May 30. Spurs will play Malaysia XI, a team featuring the best players from the Malaysian League that represents the country in exhibition matches. Some of the Malaysian XI players represent their country in FIFA-recoginzed international matches.
The match will kick off at 8:45 p.m. Malaysian time (1:45 p.m. UK, 8:45 a.m. ET) and will take place at Shah Alam Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
AIA Group Limited are, of course, Tottenham's shirt sponsors for the next few years. The Hong Kong-based insurance company is sponsoring this trip to increase exposure of Spurs and the English Premier League to the Asian market, still one of the largest untapped sports markets in the world.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino had already announced that the club will not be conducting a preseason tour ahead of the 2015-16 Premier League season, so this post-season tour will serve as their international outreach for the year. This trip will be the first time Tottenham has traveled to Malaysia since 1979.
