Tottenham Hotspur complete signing of Austrian international center back

Earlier this spring, reports surfaced that Tottenham Hotspur had agreed "in principle" to a deal that would bring FC Köln center back Kevin Wimmer to White Hart Lane. Now according to the Mirror, the deal has been completed, and the Austrian will join Spurs when the summer transfer window opens.

We've known about Wimmer for a while now. Initially it was reported that Spurs had agreed personal terms with Wimmer, whose Cologne contract expires this summer in 2019, and that the clubs were working on hammering out a transfer fee. Later, Wimmer himself spoke about the transfer, saying essentially "Yup, I'm moving, but let's not talk about it now." Now, the Mirror is saying the deal is done, for a fee of £4.25m, which confirms an earlier report from BILD.

Wimmer is 22 years old and a full Austrian international defender. He's reportedly a very solid defender and continues the trend of Spurs emphasizing young, talented players with potential. If true (since it has yet to be announced formally by either club), it would indicate the departure of at least one central defender currently on Spurs' books, most likely either Younes Kaboul or Vlad Chiriches.

£4m isn't a lot of money for a young central defender with international and major European first division league experience. Even if Wimmer isn't a lock-down starter immediately, he's another arrow in the quiver, and at only 22 years old it's likely he'll continue to improve with time.
