Cameron Carter-Vickers and Milos Veljkovic are Tottenham Hotspur U20 teammates, but this weekend they will face off against each other in the quarter finals of the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand.
Carter-Vickers' USA U20 squad progressed past Colombia 1-0 off of a Rubio Rubin strike in the 58th minute, and survived a late red card. USA keeper Zakary Steffen made a key penalty save late in the match to preserve the win. Carter-Vickers, the youngest player on the USA squad at age 17, was omnipresent in his team's back line and went the full 90'. He received numerous accolades on Twitter for his defensive performance, and his teammate Maki Tali has referred to him as "a beast."
Milos Veljkovic started Serbia's Round of 16 match against Hungary at defensive midfield and went the full 90' as well. Serbia came back from behind to score an equalizer in extra time, and progressed to the next round after Hungary scored an unfortunate own goal in the 118th minute. The final score was 2-1.
Now USA and Serbia will play each other on Sunday, June 14, with the winner progressing to the semifinals of the World Cup. The match kicks off in Auckland at 4:30 p.m. local time (4:30 a.m. England, 12:30 a.m. USA)
