It's transfer speculation time, aka "silly season," so naturally there are lots of stories floating around about which Tottenham Hotspur star players will be moving to where. One player who has made it unequivocal that he's determined to stay is central defender Jan Vertonghen, in quotes attributed to Sport Wereld, as reported in the Evening Standard.
"I think I'll stay. That's one of those typical rumors doing the rounds every summer. There's no way I'm leaving."
Say what you will about Jan's performances for Tottenham this year, his leadership ability, or his "body language," there's really no question that he's still Tottenham Hotspur's best central defender. Last summer there were murmurings about interest from Barcelona or another big-time club, but the massive bids never materialized and Jan stayed put. It seems like now he's happy and ready to continue to marshall Spurs' back line next season.
Spurs have already added Austrian CB Kevin Wimmer to the defensive stable this summer. Between Jan, Federico Fazio, Eric Dier, and Wimmer, Spurs have a pretty decent corps of defenders ahead of Hugo Lloris, and that's pending the likely departures of Younes Kaboul and Vlad Chiriches. There may be further defensive improvements as well.
Now, if Spurs can just fix the midfield.
