Sunderland seek signing of Tottenham's wantaway midfielder Mousa Dembele

Unsourced Twitter rumors have Sunderland interested in buying Mousa Dembele. Which would be crazy. That can't happen, right?

Well, this is interesting. Twitter scuttlebutt this morning indicates that Sunderland may be going in for another Tottenham Hotspur midfielder. Football journo Kristan Heneage tweeted that the Black Cats might be in the process of submitting a bid for Mousa Dembele.

Transfer speculation has been quiet with regards to Dembele. We saw this as an indication that Mauricio Pochettino liked Dembele and was going to integrate him further into the team next season, but maybe that's not the case. Spurs have already offloaded Lewis Holtby, Etienne Capoue, and Paulinho, with Benjamin Stambouli very likely sold in the next little while. That's four central midfielders out the door, and Dembele would make five.

I'm not saying you should treat this tweet as anything close to gospel. In fact, you should be super skeptical about this right from the outset. After all, if Dembele is sold, that leaves Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason, Tom Carroll, Dele Alli, and Milos Veljkovic in the midfield rotation. There's some talent there, but much of it is unproven and all of it is super young. There's only three weeks before Spurs open the Premier League season at Old Trafford. That HAS to mean that Spurs are serious about bringing in a new central midfielder, and soon, right?

RIGHT?
