Spurs inquire about yet another Southampton midfielder

He's not Schniederlin, but he did partner him for a few years.

So maybe Tottenham Hotspur isn't quite as done in the transfer window as we thought. As the close of the window careens towards us, Tom Collomosse at the Standard is reporting that Spurs have made an enquiry about the availability of Southampton defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama.

Wanyama was primarily known as "the other Southampton midfielder" during Spurs' failed pursuit of Morgan Schneiderlin this summer, but the Kenyan has shown remarkable development under Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman. Wanyama is less dynamic in the pivot than Schneiderlin, but is very adept at sitting back and shielding the defenders, something that Eric Dier has done capably well up to this point. Under Koeman, Wanyama has been given license to operate as more of a box to box midfielder. He's a solid midfielder and would be a good addition to Spurs' side.

Wanyama is quoted as admiring Pochettino from his tenure at Southampton, and might be keen to rejoin him at Spurs. However, it seems unlikely that Soton would consent to let him leave for White Hart Lane, especially after the acrimonious transfer of Toby Alderweireld earlier this summer.

I trust Collomosse more than I do most other Spurs journalists, as he rarely makes things up out of whole cloth. That said, while I'm inclined to believe that Spurs may have made an inquiry, I still remain highly skeptical that this is a deal that could happen. However, if Sven Bender or Spurs' other high profile CM targets fall through, it's not inconceivable that Spurs could make a late run for Wanyama, assuming another midfielder is still a priority.

Let's not take this as gospel quite yet, but file this rumor away for now.
